Assistant Commissioner Hilman opens first Garda BikeSafe of 2024
Garda BikeSafe got their 2024 BikeSafe programme off to a great start in Dublin, on Mothers’ Day, with a female only event. It was great to see a full workshop from a group, which was, unfortunately, under represented last year and we are very keen to address that in 2024. The feedback was excellent from all those who took part and it is something we will definitely be doing again later in the year.
Assistant Commissioner Hilman from Roads Policing opened the event and talked about an exciting year ahead for BikeSafe here in Ireland and the importance of taking part in further training to enhance our skills and keep us safer on the roads.
As many of us are getting back on our bikes after a winter lay-off, it is so important to ride to our own individual capabilities and let’s face it, we can be a little rusty for a while.
A few simple things to consider all year but especially when getting back to biking:
- Check your bike – make sure it is in good, roadworthy condition and do your POWDER checks; Petrol, Oil, Water, Damage, Electrics and Rubber (tyres)
- Check your safety equipment – make sure everything is up to standard, even helmets have a shelf life
- Always ride to the road conditions – Always match your speed to the conditions and ride within the speed limits. Don’t let others dictate your pace
- Be extra vigilant – “expect the unexpected” from other road users, especially when overtaking, approaching junctions and cornering and do your lifesaver checks
- Never ever ride your motorcycle after drinking alcohol or taking drugs
Stay safe and enjoy your motorcycling in 2024.
