Learning to Ride Smarter: Aaron’s BikeSafe Experience
For many motorcyclists, riding is more than just transport it’s freedom, enjoyment, and part of everyday life. But with that freedom comes responsibility, awareness, and the need to constantly improve your skills on the road.
Aaron, a Yamaha MT-03 rider with over three years of riding experience, recently took part in the BikeSafe programme to further develop his riding ability and confidence.
“I mainly use the bike for commuting during the week and getting out on weekends,” Aaron explains. “I signed up to learn new skills and to be taught by advanced riders who have a lot more experience and skill than myself.”
Learning from Advanced Garda Riders
The BikeSafe programme combines classroom-based learning with practical on-road coaching delivered by advanced Garda motorcyclists. Riders are given valuable insight into road positioning, hazard awareness, observation techniques, and defensive riding strategies.
Aaron found the structure of the day particularly beneficial.
“In the classroom, you get to learn about the skills the Garda riders will be showing you, like road positioning, awareness, and observation techniques,” he says. “Then, once you get out on the road, you can put those skills into practice and get direct feedback from the Garda rider, which is really helpful.”
The Reality of Riding on Irish Roads
When asked about the biggest dangers facing motorcyclists, Aaron highlighted an issue many riders can relate to visibility and driver awareness.
“I’d say the biggest risk is other cars and drivers not paying attention,” he explains. “On a motorcycle, you’re a lot smaller than a car and much harder to see.”
Aaron also shared a recent close call while riding in Glendalough.
“I was overtaking a car and, whether the driver wasn’t paying attention or wasn’t happy with the overtake, they suddenly pulled out in front of me while I was passing. I had to slow down quickly and pull back in behind them.”
Experiences like this reinforce the importance of defensive riding, anticipation, and continuous training.
Building Confidence Through Training
BikeSafe is designed to help riders sharpen their skills, improve decision-making, and build confidence in a supportive learning environment.
Aaron strongly encourages other riders to take part.
“Absolutely, I’d highly recommend it. It’s a great opportunity to learn from advanced riders, improve your skills, and build confidence on the road.”
When asked what advice he would give to new riders, his answer was simple but important:
“Stay calm, stay cautious, and always expect the unexpected.”
