BikeSafe workshop days
On Sunday, 14th September 2025, BikeSafe returned with workshop days held in four locations across the country:
- Castleisland, Co. Kerry
- Wexford
- Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
- Dublin Castle
Despite mixed weather conditions, turnout was strong, including a packed session at Dublin Castle.
What is BikeSafe?
BikeSafe is a proactive motorcycle safety initiative that includes a classroom-based workshop followed by an on-road assessed ride, led by an Advanced Garda Motorcyclist., it’s open to all motorcyclist who hold a full valid motorcycle licence and have the appropriate insurance. Whether you’ve recently passed your test, are returning to biking after a break, or are a seasoned rider looking to sharpen your skills, BikeSafe offers valuable insights and training. The goal is simple: to reduce motorcycle collisions by improving rider skills and safety on the roads.
Rider Experience – Philip’s Story
We caught up with Philip Maher, a participant in the Dublin Castle session, who shared why he signed up and what he gained from the workshop:
“I’ve been biking about three years. I decided to do BikeSafe because I’m working towards completing my ROSPA and looking to volunteer with Blood Bikes. To do that, you need advanced training, and BikeSafe is a great step towards that.
The biggest risks for riders are drivers on their phones or changing lanes without looking. Visibility is always an issue in city traffic, especially in Dublin. Today’s course really highlighted the importance of perception and planning – getting information earlier so you can position yourself better and avoid unnecessary risks.
I’d recommend BikeSafe to all riders. It’s a brilliant way to check in on your skills and identify areas to improve, ultimately making you a safer, more confident rider.”
Key Takeaways from the Day
- BikeSafe is more than just a skills check – it’s a gateway to advanced riding qualifications such as ROSPA etc.
- Even experienced riders found new insights, especially around hazard perception, positioning, and planning ahead.
- Weather may not have been perfect, but the enthusiasm of participants and the dedication of Advanced Garda motorcyclists made the day a success.
