Welcome to the BikeSafe Podcast – Episode 1: Motorcycle Safety
We’re excited to launch the BikeSafe Podcast, a new series from An Garda Síochána’s Roads Policing Unit in Dublin Castle, dedicated to motorcycle safety and rider awareness. Whether you’re a seasoned motorcyclist or just starting out, this podcast is for you.
Meet the Hosts
Superintendent Stephen McCauley brings over 30 years of policing and lifelong motorcycle experience to the mic. Co-hosting is Garda Seamus Fitzgerald, an advanced Garda motorcyclist with a deep passion for riding both on and off duty. Together, they combine professional expertise with personal passion for two wheels and open roads.
“What you have here are basically two lads that are passionate about motorcycling that just happen to be guards.” – Superintendent McCauley
What to Expect in this Episode
In this debut episode, our hosts dive into essential motorcycle safety tips—especially for those returning to the road after a winter break. They introduce listeners to the POWDER check, a simple acronym every motorcyclist should know:
- P – Petrol
- O – Oil
- W – Water (Coolant)
- D – Damage
- E – Electrics
- R – Rubber (Tyres)
The episode also emphasizes the importance of slow-speed control, confidence rebuilding after time off the bike, and maintaining visibility on the roads.
What Is BikeSafe?
The podcast also introduces BikeSafe, a nationwide initiative where members of the public spend a day with Advanced Garda motorcyclists to improve road safety awareness. Participants attend a classroom session and an observed ride—no tests, just valuable advice and feedback in a relaxed setting.
“BikeSafe is not about critiquing you. It’s about sharing advice and experiences to make you a safer, more confident rider.” – Garda Fitzgerald
